With the 17th Asian Games (Incheon Asiad) to be held in Incheon, South Korea this year, North Korea has said they would join the game and would also send a cheerleading squad to cheer on the team.
Although there is military tension between the north and south, Kim Eui Do, the spokesperson of the Unification Ministry has said their goal is for the successful completion of the Asian Games. It is also in hopes for unity of the people in North and South Korea.
With North Korean athletes joining the event, the National Defense Commission made a proposal for both sides to stop military drills and slander. Though, Seoul disregarded the proposal as they feel that Pyongyang isn’t being sincere since they’ve launched numerous short-range missiles at them.
The North conducted a series of missile and rocket test before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to South Korea last week. According to some people, it was a protest against Xi Jinping since Beijing’s leader visited South Korea first.
In 1986, North Korea boycotted the Asian Games and the 1988 Summer Olympics which were both held in Seoul. They did eventually attend the 2002 Asian Games in Busan and the 2005 Asian Athletics Championship in Incheon.
North Korea’s cheerleading squad is said to consist of beautiful young women. In previous years, the cheerleaders received more attention than the North’s athletes.
